Can anybody suggest a more elegant way to anchor the umbrella?

The umbrella is free standing, which I love - we can move it around according to our needs. And we put it away into the garage for the winter. But it's quite heavy and when open tends to flip. The temporary solution we came up with was the sand filled bags. They seem to do the job, but are not very sightly or esthetically pleasing. Any suggestions to remedy this?

The garden centers in my area sell some large and VERY heavy iron umbrella stands which can (supposedly) withstand quite a breeze.
I have also seen plastic stands filled with sand for added weight. I cannot say this option is the most attractive, but it might do in a pinch ;)

Look for old milk churns at local auction houses. Find a tube (plumbing dept at DIY store) and place it in churn. Pack with soil and plant with trailing plants.
It will look good ecven when not holding parasol. Even better if you paint the churn

Sounds like a great idea! Should try and find those churns! Thanks!

Thank you so much! One way or another (churns or some type of planters), I think it would look a lot better than what I have at the moment, and both would still be movable.I l-o-o-ve the idea of plants under the umbrella!
