Large Vintage Dominoes

We started out with a 2x10 piece of lumber that Whitney purchased from Lowe's for $5.00. We marked off every 16 inches and began cutting with our circular saw which made 6 individual pieces.
We then picked up our battery powered sander and took turns sanding down every edge and corner to form the shape of a domino.
Now for the paint! We purchased Behr Cozy Cottage Satin from Home Depot...we picked this one purely for the name (it's a shade of cream).
We dry brushed some Behr Forever Black Satin over a circle stencil that we cut with our Cricut. It made for perfect dots...
We placed electrical tape on each domino to form a stencil for us to dry brush a line down the middle....we let it curve around the edge just a tad....
Now for more sanding...We used our 3M sanding block with 80 grit sand paper and roughed-up the edges a lot (especially the corners)....
A coat of Minwax Red Mahogany stain over the distressed edges gave the dominoes a great vintage look...
and we finished these babies off with our FAVE ~ Ralph Lauren Smoke Glaze (also purchased at Home Depot) to complete our vintage look ~ just paint on and wipe away with an old cloth!
Our finished Large Vintage Dominoes!
We decided at the last minute that our dominoes would be best displayed hanging on a wall.... A package of 6 Saw Tooth Hangers (purchased at Wal-Mart for $0.97) made hanging simple!
Just hammer one in the center of each domino....
A few wall anchors later and our dominoes are on perfect display!
I decided to hang mine on a wall in my dining room/entry way. They add such a fun touch to the room!
Whitney decided to hang her dominoes on a wall by her sitting area in her loft. They look great and make the perfect conversation piece!

The red mahogany stain on the distressed edges is a nice touch - definitely gives it that vintage feel. Nice job!

What a nice idea for a my kids' playroom... And cheap to boot!
I'm not familiar with the Cricut. Is it like a hole punch?
kathyswank on 30 October 2009
The Cricut looks a bit like a printer and cuts various shapes and letters out of paper. And I so want one! http://www.cricut.com/

How is it that you use saw tooth hangers and everything ends up perfectly aligned and level, but when I use them my pictures look like they're going to slide off the wall?? Seriously not fair. What's your secret?

Too cool! Did you cover the dominoes with a clear coat or just leave it at the glaze? Come to think of it, does glaze work like a clear coat? Don't think I've used a Ralph Lauren glaze before.

Hey Dave! The glaze is not a clear coat but if you are making something that will hang on the wall or really won't be touched I wouldn't mess with a clear coat.
Sam~ Not sure about those hangers:)! We have never had a problem with them.
Thanks guys!

Fair enough. The dominoes look a little glossy in one pic so I assumed clear coat. But you did use satin paint and the glaze probably has a slight sheen, so there you go :)

!sam! - don't feel bad. I have the same problem.

I'm loving these for two reasons. Graphically they're simple yet powerful. Nostalgically, they bring back wonderful childhood memories of watching my papa play dominoes for hours with his friends after backyard bar-b-ques. Great job!
