Makeshift Drill Depth Gauge

The other day, while watching a re-run of The New Yankee Workshop, I was reminded of an easy way to estimate depth when drilling into something.

If you measure your desired drilling depth up the length of your drill bit (starting at the tip) and then wrap a piece of tape around the bit at that point, you'll have a nifty guide to remind you to stop drilling before you go too deep.

Just remember that this is only a guide. It's still possible to drill too far if you're not paying attention.

Great tip!!! Also, if you leave a "tail" of tape about 1/2"-1" long, it will clear the shavings away as you get close to the work piece.

That's a great idea HandyMan! I'm always annoyed when the tape nears the surface you're drilling into and you can't see anything because of the wood shavings. I can't believe I didn't think of that.
