Built-in Bookshelves - Reclaiming Wasted Space

I really don't understand the appeal of art niches... they're just a waste of space if you ask me. That's why I was pleased to find this awesome repurposed niche on Mike and McGee (via This Young House).

The homeowners ripped out an existing niche, replaced an impractical recessed light fixture with a new wall sconce, and installed a new homemade bookcase. It's a great way to reclaim previously wasted space (and looks awesome)! Check out the homeowners' blog for more info.

I'd love to try something like this... but if you're not up for a project of this scale, consider adding shelves to an existing niche to achieve a similar effect without all the demolition. Either way, this is a great idea!
