My landlord's totally gonna kill me. I peeled off some adhesive, grippy, non-slip strip things in my bathtub and some of the tub glazing came off with it.
Not cool.
Is there a way to fix this without refinishing the entire tub? I went to the Home Depot and the only suggestion they had was to buy a whole tub refinishing kit. They had a spray-on option and a roll-on option, but I won't be able to shower for at least three days if I go with one of those products.
Are there any other options??? I'm afraid if I have to refinish the entire tub I'll do something wrong and make everything worse. Can I just use regular paint to touch up the spots? Please help!

Did you put the strips there or were they there when you moved in? Is the tub acrylic, fiberglass, cast iron, steel?

Thanks for trying to help me!
The strips were there when I moved in and I just had to go and remove them. arg. I think the tub's cast iron maybe? I know it's really old, so I'm assuming. Also, the surface beneath the glazing is green... if that's important.

Looks like you learned home improvement lesson #1. "If it's not broke, don't fix it". Hmmm.....without seeing the damage it's a tough call....If it's a old cast iron tub, the original finish shouldn't peel off like that. So it's most likely a field applied coating.....which may have a warranty? You won't know unless you ask the landlord. I think the problem should be the landlords, especially if the tub has been refinished before.
Stick up for your rights and don't be pushed around. Offer to split the cost as a last resort.
Also, I wouldn't get the kits from Home Depot. It'll make a bad problem worse.
Good Luck.

How big are the peeled areas? (Sorry... It's kinda hard to tell from the picture)
mizz_rachel on 7 April 2009
Thanx guys. You're right - the landlord mentioned that she had the tub refinished a number of years ago.
Mike - the peeled areas are about the size of quarters, maybe slightly larger. I should have mentioned that in the post. Does that help you?

You also could just get similar strips that were there in the first place, and place them over. If the cracks aren't that large they should be able to cover them up :P
(yes yes, I do shove dirt under my rugs... :P)

I found a solution!!! My friend told me about this tub paint stuff and it worked! It's just the wrong color. lol.
I should have just listed to you, rh. I'm a sweep the dirt under my rugs kinda gal. ;)

We had a vintage clawfoot tub professionally refinished over 20 years ago. It never had a problem till we put one of those suction-cup backed, non-slip pads in it. The little suction cups pulled up the finish on the floor of the tub, and then it started cracking and peeling. Now, our tub floor is a mess. We want to repair the damage, and are looking for a product that will work.
I am researching products now, but HOW I wish I had known not to use anything that sticks to the surface, or puts suction on the surface of any refinished tub. The product I'm considering is "Tough as Tile". Does anyone have any experience with it?
