Refinishing dining table and chairs

I bought a cheap table + 4 chairs off of Craigslist with the intention of stripping, sanding, restaining, and refinishing them. Three years later this project still isn't finished, but I've learned that things that seem easy can actually take a lot of work...

My original plan was to stain the table and all of the chairs. But because trying to strip the existing varnish off the chairs has been particularly painful, I'm now leaning toward just painting them.
